The Challenge
For many young people living in Brazil's favelas, the first gift they receive isn’t a soccer ball. It’s not a doll. It’s a gun. This is the story of Jovem MK, a rising Brazilian rapper whose debut album, Meu Karma, is inspired by her own life journey. To launch the album, we went beyond a traditional music video. Instead, we transformed her story into a powerful musical short film for the entire album — capturing the rise, fall, and redemption experienced by so many young Brazilians who are drawn into a life of crime from an early age.
The Solution
To translate Meu Karma into an impactful cinematic experience, we turned Jovem MK’s album into a powerful short film that blended music, storytelling, and social commentary. The film was crafted to be both poetic and visceral, shining a light on the everyday struggles of marginalized youth in Brazil. Inspired by the album’s lyrics, the narrative wove together the personal stories of young people growing up in the favelas, with a focus on the constant threat of gun violence. Its non-linear structure was designed to reflect not only the physical, but also the psychological toll of living in such an environment. More than just telling a story, the film created an emotional bridge between the music and the real-world challenges it confronts. By combining these elements, the execution aimed to elevate the conversation around gun violence — and its deep roots in racial and socio-economic inequality.
